Murdoch and me

In my latest post on WNYC I argue that Rupert Murdoch deserves credit for shuttering News of the World. I’ll let you all guess what kind of comments I’m getting on that idea.

Yeahhhhhh, gonna have to side with the haters on this one. Murdoch may not be ordering people to hack phones — I don’t believe that; the man’s not stupid — but this issue is years old. He should have shut it down then … not when it jeopardized his BskyB deal. And Rebekah Brooks should have her head on a pike.

And this is also a case where media grudge matches blew this case wide open. The police and UK government seemed to have every intention of bumbling this case or sweeping it under the rug — but because Murdoch hates the Times and vice-versa, the Times kept digging (and the Guardian). Good old fashioned media cat fights involving billions of dollars and jobs and skullduggery.

And Rupe may close News of the World, but he’ll probably just start a Sunday edition of one of his other papers. With the exact same employees.

Murdoch owns the UK Times

I’m sure he was hoping it would all go away but he still took steps no other paper has taken when caught violating the public’s trust. Again, I’m not really a *fan*, though I like that he exists, but he did the right thing here.
