Charlie Chaplin and the cell phone

If you haven’t heard already, a guy from Belfast named George Clarke found what appears to be a woman walking down the street and talking on a cell phone in the Charlie Chaplin movie The Circus. The film was made in 1928. Here’s the video:

Sure, the woman appears to be holding something in her hand and speaking but Clarke’s conclusion that she must be, wait for it, a time traveler seems a bit extreme. She might be laughing while holding a transistor radio, she might be shielding her face from the camera and speaking to the cameraman. It’s a cool find but only because it makes us wonder exactly what we’re seeing, not because time travel was involved.

UPDATE: Now this guy, that’s a time traveler.

ANOTHER UPDATE: Here’s a post about George Clarke, who is also a filmmaker, and how he showed this clip to 100 people who all reached the same conclusion: time traveler.

transistors were invented some time in the 50’s…

she sure look like speaking into something…but were there people then as likely as now to talk to themselves on the street? I encountered at least two yesterday on the train…

If she’s holding a cell phone, and speaking into it, then that means that someone else has a cell phone too. And there are satellites to carry the signal. Etc…

So she’s actually more likely to be an alien, than a time traveler.

Earache + toothache.

She’s scratching her ear.

Um, she’s simply using a walkie-talkie… Remember those?

And who/what, exactly, is providing her cell phone service? That would be impressive!
