Because a 60 vote, filibuster-proof majority just wasn’t enough

Obama to POLITICO: Congress shares the blame for BP.

Wow, Obama is blaming the Democrat-controlled Congress for the spill?

Not. Exactly.

GET THIS:

In an interview with POLITICO, the president said: “I think it’s fair to say, if six months ago, before this spill had happened, I had gone up to Congress and I had said we need to crack down a lot harder on oil companies and we need to spend more money on technology to respond in case of a catastrophic spill, there are folks up there, who will not be named, who would have said this is classic, big-government overregulation and wasteful spending.”

He would have done something, you see, but those darned Republicans just keep getting in his metaphorical way.

Well, the last ass he kicked belonged to a Republican, so he just keeps returning to what he knows.

That’s the swell thing about Obama. He can always find someone to blame when things go wrong.

“we need to spend more money on technology to respond in case of a catastrophic spill”

Meaning that taxpayers would be paying for the “technology,” instead of the companies themselves. Wow, that would be such an incentive for oil companies to invest in safety!

Since Obama has never run a real business, he doesn’t understand that there’s nothing like the threat of bankruptcy to keep a business on its toes so it doesn’t harm others: bankruptcy from having to pay for damages, and bankruptcy from inefficient safety measures. Big government doesn’t have to worry about bankruptcy when it can soak the taxpayers (or have its central bank purchase bonds whose redemptions taxpayers will pay for in the future).
