Why now?

The story that Elizabeth Edwards has left John Edwards is pretty astounding.

She didn’t leave him when she found out he cheated, even helped conceal the affair so that he could still pursue the presidency.

She didn’t leave him when pictures surfaced of him holding a child any monkey knew was his.

She didn’t leave him when he went on TV and admitted to the affair, clarifying the timing but denying his child.

Elizabeth Edwards only left her husband when he finally, finally did the right thing and accepted responsibility for his child.

Her timing lends a lot of weight to the story that she’s the wicked witch of the south. What kind of woman stays through all of that and then leaves when her husband finally steps up and behaves like a man? It’s as if she was ready to live out her days with him as long as they could pretend the child didn’t exist. The fact that the child would be hurt in the process seemed not to matter at all. Cold.

Great points as usual, Karol.

Pity the opposing divorce lawyers who will have to divide up the 29,000 square foot house and its contents.

And what about John’s lovely hair ?
Is that a mutually acquired asset ? Or did he bring that to the marriage ?

Ultimately, I would have thought they’d still stay together for “the sake of the children.”
Think about it, with a house that big, they could probably live comfortably in separate wings and not even bump into one another but for once every couple of years.

They could even hire Jimmy Carter to arrange the schedules of their tennis court time.

I don’t know. That situation is so over-the-top horrible for both of them, I couldn’t blame either of them for walking away at this point.

She left because the last possible bit of political viability just evaporated.

She left because I think the last possibility of deniability evaporated plus she saw John interacting with his daughter. Remember the line about how she’d have to admit she was married to a monster? Well, Elizabeth finally rolled over one morning and realized the radioactive morning breath wasn’t just one of John’s quirks.

Then she realized, “Wait a second–if he’s done all this to me and loves that child like he loves ours, what happens when this cancer carries me off? How much is he paying this ____ in child support and from what assets?” Sorry, but I’ve said from jump street she needed to take care of her kids. It looks like that finally sunk in when the child support agreement for John’s love child got done up, as that nice court order placed ol’ Frances near the front of the line for any assets the Feds leave. On the other hand, I think “divorce settlement” trumps “bastard child support agreement” in most states.

Politcal wives are in a class of their own. Hillary, Nancy and even Elanor

Mark Poling ftw.

Also, this is not how aristocrats behave. They deny the child till the end of their lives while quietly supporting him/her, circa Austenian England.

forestalling the inevitable disclosures by Andrew Young is NOT stepping up and acting like a man.

none of those people are poster people for morality.
