Metallica loves Mariano back

We went to the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame concert tonight at Madison Square Garden in NY.  The performers were Aretha Franklin, Jeff Beck (as a last minute-replacement for Eric Clapton), Metallica and U2.  In addition to all of those, there were a bunch of surprise guests including Annie Lennox, Buddy Guy, Black Eyed Peas, Lou Reed, Sting, Ozzy Osbourne, Ray Davies, Bruce Springsteen, Patti Smith and Mick Jagger.  Pretty star-studded.  And because it was a slightly older crowd than, say, the Jay-Z concert we went to a few weeks ago, everyone was sitting pretty much the whole time–which suited my 6.5 months pregnant self very well.

The best part?  When Metallica started playing “Enter Sandman” and put Mariano Rivera on the screen (FYI to non-sports fans: Mariano Rivera is the Yankees closer pitcher.  He is very, very good.  The use of the song is like “he puts the game to bed”.)  The crowd went crazy.  Pretty awesome:

when crazy how?
Did they start throwing tomatoes?
Did all the Mets fans walk out?
Did Billy Wagner jump up on stage and smash some guitars?
Did everyone ask, “What happened to you guys since you released the black album?”

As DLR used to sing, “Going crazy, oooh, from the heat!”

I don’t know–Load, ReLoad, and Death Magnetic aren’t totally useless.
