Go drink at the Breslin

A bar opens in NY.  Big whoop, right?  But this one happens to be across the street from a mosque.  We can’t have that, can we?  So the mosque’s leaders ask the bar to move (seriously).

The owner of the bar had a really great response which included laughter, cursing and the reminder that we live in America.  For that he was mildly threatened “He said the mosque had suggested it couldn’t control the behavior of “a few bad eggs”; i.e., we could get a brick through our window.”

The owner did bend a little and agreed to cover up the windows of the bar, especially since the bar hosted a gay wedding last week.

I like this story, and even though I don’t think the owner should have to cover up his windows it’s a nice, neighborly gesture that he did.

What I don’t like, and what shows me that we’re becoming a terrified-to-offend society, even if that means giving up our own freedoms, are the comments on the post about this over at Gothamist.  Apparently, the writer of the post (who told the whole story I just summed up here) is a total racist for thinking this has anything to do with Islam, and is a jingoist for loving that the owner said “This is the United States of America and we’ll do whatever the fuck we want.” Click over and read the comments, you won’t be surprised but you will be appalled.

Oh, no, I’m not surprised. I still remember some comments after my own spat with islamic preachers 2 years ago (is it already?).

God, I hope those idiots are the first ones stoned to death-based on the Persian experiment they probably will be-when the head-choppers take over.

Ha – did you see my comment on the Gothamist thread?

“This is the United States of America. We’ll do whatever the f*** we want” is serious bumper sticker material. I will happily drink at that bar.
