The man who was nowhere near ready to be president

Barack Obama, September 13, 2007: “The best way to protect our security and to pressure Iraq’s leaders to resolve their civil war is to immediately begin to remove our combat troops,” Mr. Obama said. “Not in six months or one year — now.”

Barack Obama, February 26, 2009: Obama says most troops out of Iraq by August 2010

Barack Obama, April 7, 2009: The next 18 months are “critical,” Mr. Obama says [meaning, of course, that we're staying for 18 months and not 6 months or "now"].

Obama spoke the truth. Really. His speechwriters were either very clever or very lucky to have put in such precise phrasing. If pressed, Obama today can say, “Well all I said was that we should begin to pull out. I said nothing about when it would be finished.”
