Twittering Mad
And speaking of Twitter and Mad Men, you can follow most of the cast of the show on Twitter. I only follow Joan so far but Ken Cosgrove and two different Betty Drapers follow me.
Madness
It’s cool that Mad Men is USA Today’s “Show of the Year” (via Andy Roth’s twitter) but the scenes they showcase are not at all memorable or understandable without context. The typewriter theft, a random Asian waitress hitting on Don and Pete storming into Don’s office after his dad is killed? And no scene with Joanie? I mean, c’mon. Everyone knows she makes that show. At least throw in Peggy.

Don’t drink too much this holiday season, ladies
Beer goggles last longer for women:
Researchers found that women who drink even moderately develop a reduced ability to rate attractiveness in male faces, even when they are sober.
Those who drank were less able to detect male facial symmetry, a marker of attractiveness and good genes which is thought to play an important role in the choice of a partner.

For New Yorkers or those visiting us over the holidays
Jean Georges Vongerichten, one of the best chefs in the world, is offering a special $35 dinner at his restaurants through the new year. We tried it the other night at Nougatine (or, I did anyway, IC ordered off the regular menu) and it was so delicious. We’re giving Matsugen a shot tomorrow. Jean Georges describes the Matsugen deal as the best of the bunch:
The best deal, by far, is at Matsugen. In this mini-omakase dinner menu, you get six courses, including the black cod with miso and the Kamoseiro duck soup with soba noodles. It’s a deeply satisfying meal that gives you a true taste of Japan. I also love the bento box lunch because one of the four courses is the goma-dare soba, my favorite dish there.
Can’t wait.
Perhaps we can send Al Qaeda a press release?

Dark Friday afternoon blogging
I have three relationship-y things that fascinate me. They are: infidelity, short marriages, and people who marry the same person more than once. What are yours? Or am I the only one who can’t bypass an article about 6 week marriages or “why women cheat”.
It’s snowing in New York

Oh, and also
The Human Rights Campaign sent a blistering letter to Obama (D) in which it called the choice of Warren “a genuine blow” to gay Americans, who supported Obama overwhelmingly in his race against Republican nominee John McCain.
The letter noted Warren’s vocal support of California’s Proposition 8, a ballot measure banning gay marriage in the state that was approved by California voters last month. “By inviting Rick Warren to your inauguration, you have tarnished the view that gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Americans have a place at your table,” the letter said.
That’s fierce
The Obama presidency is already completely awesome and he hasn’t even been sworn in yet. Rick Warren to give the invocation at the inauguration? Amazing!
President-elect Barack Obama this morning defended his choice of evangelical megapastor Rick Warren to deliver the invocation at next month’s swearing-in, saying that while he differs with the conservative pastor on social issues, he wants to have diverse voices at the ceremony.
“I am a fierce advocate of equality for gay and lesbian Americans. It is something that I have been consistent on and something that I intend to continue to be consistent on in my presidency,” Obama said.
Actually, Barack Obama opposes gay marriage. Just like Rick Warren. So really either they’re both fierce advocates of equality for gay and lesbian Americans or they both aren’t all that fierce in their advocacy for gay and lesbian Americans.

Guess who’s back?
Eliot Spitzer will be participating in the March debate for Intelligence Squared US on the motion “Blame Washington more than Wall Street for the financial crisis.” You can all guess which side he’s taking. Tickets are still available but you can bet they won’t be soon. The incredible spring schedule in its entirety is here.
*Disclosure: I’ve mentioned before that I do PR consulting for IQ2 but I couldn’t let that preclude me from blogging about Spitzer’s first public appearance in some time.
Me, me, me
