Paging Von Bek, again

If Fred Thompson does indeed get in the race, and Tommy Thompson doesn’t see the writing on the wall and drop out before then, won’t it be more than a little confusing to have two Thompsons vying for the Republican nomination?

Ace’s moron-blog readers have already confused the two while voting in an online poll and these are, presumably, people who read blogs and should be more plugged in than the general population.

So, how will it work with two Thompsons? And have we ever had a race where two candidates shared a last name?

Fred should pick Tommy as his running mate. Their posters and buttons would be smaller and they would save a mint.

That’s not what I posted. I don’t know what happened there.

And they’d have the perfect campaign song.
I seem to recall reading that when Eugene McCarthy was running for President, some small amount of his support came from people who thought they were voting for Joseph McCarthy.

I think Pat Buchanan ran against James Buchanan in 1856.

Ignoring the odd brother against brother moments (like when two Kennedy brothers got votes in the 1968 convention-though one was dead; when both Fatty Howell Cobb and his fanatic little brother Tom were both candidates in 1861 in Montgomery-Jeff Davis crushed them not to mention the two other candidates from GA; and both Charlie and W.J. Bryan both being candidates in New York at the Dem convention in ‘24), the best example is when Gov. Davis clashed with former Amb. Davis and a zillion other candidates in 1924 at the same 103 ballot Dem convention which saw the Bryan brothers both have support. Amb. Davis somehow won the damn thing only to get crushed by Silent Cal. Charlie Bryan as Vp didn’t help.
On an aside, Tommy Thomposn seems to be doing some decent work in laying a campaign in Iowa. If he can actually pull himself together for a debate (sorry but he did a bad job in both of the debates so far), he may be able to be the first guy in the second tier, kind of like what Bill Richardson is to the Dems. The problem is like Lamar in 2000, he could be putting way too much into the Ames Straw poll. If he flops there, he could be toast.
As long as I am on the “other” candidates, why the hell can’t Gilmore raise money ? This is downright humiliating for a former RNC chair.

They should run as mates, it’ll save space on bumperstickers.

I seem to remember we had Kerry and Kerrey in 1988.

Nah. Bob Kerrey ran in 92.
