In a lot of ways, I’m a total girlie girl. I like having painted nails, wearing skirts, rocking the high heels. But upon closer inspection, you’d learn that I choose my manicurist based on her speed, find skirts easier, and more comfortable, to wear than pants and my high heels are Aerosoles–it’s practically cheating.
One thing that I can never seem to girl up for is the handbag obsession. I have three hand bags in my rotation.
There is the black Gucci bag that I wear to work. My brother bought it for me in Italy three years ago (that’s like 15 years in the lifespan of other clothing items) particularly because he felt I lacked a good bag.
Then there’s a velvet Prada bag that has had the straps fixed and refixed so often because it too is something like 3-4 years old.
Finally, my favorite bag: a small white one with Billie Holiday’s face on it. I love it, despite the fact that it fits hardly anything, certainly not my blackberry AND my cell phone, because it’s so different and I’ve never seen another person carrying it.
Anyway, it’s time for a new bag and I’ve been surfing EBAY. I just can’t do the typical Christian Dior saddlebag or the cheesy Louis Vuitton pochette. I likely wouldn’t want a Balenciaga, even if I could afford it, because everyone and their mother has one (although I’ve never seen anyone carry one like this).
So, ladies reading Alarming News, what do you recommend? I like simple, black, without the designer name all over it and it can’t be worn by every third girl on the upper east side of Manhattan. Whattya got?

HA! right up my alley. hobo, hobo, hobo all the way. they have the loveliest interiors and the greatest feel to their leathers. and i wouldn’t recommended it if i didn’t think their stuff was just as much “karol” as “candy girl.” they’re high -quality and hip without being too, i don’t know, standard designer-y.
you can find them in boutiques and nordstrom’s; not sure about saks.
here’s their site:
i’m obsessed with the ‘madeleine’ clutch:
and i just got my new hobo wallet (last one is getting icky after being tossed around for two years) from onlineshoes.com, which does free shipping:
good luck, darling!! and whatever you do, don’t dare dignify dooney & burke.
My favorite bag was a Ballys. Black, long shoulder strap, medium size, textured leather so scratches do not show. Alas, they no longer make the style. I also liked their faux crocadile leather pumps in different colors. Conservative and comfortable and wouldn’t be destroyed in 90 days. (I’m tough on shoes.)
I am the very poorest excuse for a girl in this sense. I seriously got a meme last week that called for me to dump out my purse and blog the contents. I had to pass. I don’t even carry a purse anymore. I have a wallet, but I usually just carry an ID and a credit card in my back pocket and lip gloss in the front.
That being said, I love for other people to carry cute bags. I just have never been able to do it. I bought a friend of mine the Balenciaga motorcycle bag you linked as a wedding present, and she LOVES it. In fact, it was so gorgeous, it almost turned me into a purse girl. Almost.
It has a very unprissy feel, lots of room, but it’s still beautiful. Of course, she lives in ATL, so not that many people have one of them. The story may be different for you.
‘Fraid I’m too out of the girly girl game to helpfully comment on this, but what the hell. I carry a black leather Kenneth Cole my sister gave me as a hand-me-up. i don’t know how old it is, but it looks good and is functional–a lot like what jane just described above. Have fun shopping!
Normally, I don’t like logos all over bags, though the Coach signature look enough like a regular pattern that it doesn’t look like I’m saying, “Look, I can buy designer!” And Coach’s plain leather bags are also really cute.
A laugh for Mary Katharine–until I had my son and started carrying my wallet in his diaper bag, I just carried the wallet and my keys. And when I was going somewhere I didn’t want to take the wallet, I was an ID-back pocket, Chapstick-front pocket girl myself.
I wouldn’t be carrying one now had my sister not given me hers, and I wouldn’t remotely care what brand it is as long as it fit my stuff and looked okay.
I know this is a chick thread, but I had no idea girls ‘wear’ handbags. I thought you ‘carried’ them.
I didn’t know girls ‘wear’ handbags. When did you stop ‘carrying’ them? And are they still full of way too much extra ’stuff’?
There is a saying from ancient Mesopotamia:
“It’s just my old bag, dad!”
As a professional desigher, I’m getting so fed up every workday with watching what I select and demonstrating impeccable taste for money, I make a point do not look at the labels when shopping for clothes and accessories.
All I know about
-my black “suit” bag is that it is Italian;
-my yellow summer clutch is that I bought it for peanuts at French accessories place on 32nd street that was going out of business
-my red-and-black “vampire” evening purse was acquired at Duffy’s for mere $50, and you would never believe how much it can hold
-any formal “legal paper-size” bags i might need for carrying work-related printed materials I successfully substitute with cotton trophy bags presented to me by my carpet and furniture vendors.
Oh, and another thing – I would never buy a bag with so many unnecessary pockets, zippers and latches that it resembles a safari jacket; be it Dior, Vuitton or Couch.
tod’s. i am a huge huge fan of their bags, even though they are ridiculously expensive, but i think given their quality and low-key look are worth every penny. it’s also not a bag everyone else is sporting.
I love to ride on bike then read this, and you?
intro to my first “blog”. wanted to find info about “hobo international wallets”. ordered a clutch from nordstrom and may prefer a regular old wallet instead. anyone know if hobo even makes the regular wallet or just the clutch? great leather and very affordable by the way.
