Bush got elected twice taking on his base. The real issue is that Congress is more concerned with the procedure than the substance – that an elected official was caught on tape taking a bribe.
As usual, the priorities are out of touch.

Given the rumors that hastert himself may be under investigation by the feds, his defense may not be so inexplicable.

Well, I thought about that. Could there be a more obvious way for him to draw attention to himself that a weirdass move like this?

Either Hastert’s got stuff to worry about in his own papers, or he went back for seconds when the AMA offered free lobotomies for members of the Republican Congressional Caucus.
