Ramadan/Eid al-fitr Post Script (by guest blogger Julia)

The executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations in Pembroke Pines, Florida offered his view to Florida’s Sun-Sentinel about why this year’s Ramadan was special:

“What I think is very significant this year is that taking into consideration all that has happened within the Muslims who live in America and the … challenges that we faced, the month of Ramadan once again boosts our morale and it increased our self-esteem,” he said. “And once again we apply forgiveness toward those who have wronged us in many ways; the negative publicity and the injustices passed upon us.”

That’s all we need: Muslims with even more self-esteem than whatever it is that’s making them ensure that theirs is “the world’s sole supreme religion.” In fact, it seems that as soon as you convert to Islam, you get an immediate morale boost. Just listen to new Muslina (Muslim Latina) Melissa Matos, who “clasps her hands excitedly and a smile spreads from ear-to-ear” when she talks about her new faith:

“Its simplicity and its universality, it’s for every culture, for every time, every country, it’s for everyone,” she said.

I’d say that if you’re recruiting people to kill and be killed for you, you’ve got pretty good self-esteem. Although if your goal is to make your people more suicidial, boosting their morale may be a bit counterproductive, no? Unless, of course, we’re looking at a new diagnosis wherein excessive self-esteem produces suicidal tendencies.

Eid al-fitr is the holiday that closes Ramadan. A friend of mine who had never heard of it before this year asked, “What do they do–exchange bombs?”

There is a rather disturbing trend of Western women becoming Muslim.
Some seem to be under the illusion (delusion?) that they will be freer from sexism.
Perhaps someone should highlight appropriate sections from the Koran and Suras.
Does this “Muslina” think that she will be in a less macho culture?
Others seem to seek religious fervor, enlightenment and clarity. While some may well have had a calling towards submission, others may have lacked clarity or structure in their original religion.
Fox News ran a story on religion in Great Britain. The old Episcopalian Churches are dying out. Soon there will be more Muslims than Christians attending services weekly.
The number of converts is positively astounding.

Yeah, please, Jamal, “educate” all of us. People can believe what they want to believe, but Muslims aren’t exactly arguing from a sympathetic position at the moment. “The moment” being defined as the past twenty-five years or so.
As for the Westerners turning to Islam, I have a feeling it’s just a phase, like dying your hair or voting Democrat. Sooner or later they’ll likely just lose interest.

Wouldnt worry Jamal. Your garden variety religious and political bigot couldnt care less that GENUINE Islam does not, has not and never will preach violence. How can you bury your head in the religious sand if you take notice such minor things as common sense and fact?
Other side of the coin as you must admit there is. Muslims would have an easier time if they were to be more active in their condemnation of those who pevert their religion for their own ends. Most might be more synpathetic and less susceptible to the asinine level of ignorance one often encounters if they could see often enough the vast difference between men (in the loosest possible term) such as Bin Laden and say MUHAMMED ALI.
Lastly yes the Koran is not exactly fair to women. Neither was christianity as little as 200 years ago. Islam is approximately 500 years younger then christianity and displays many of the trends the latter displayed over time. Many chrisitians still believe gays are evil, wicked and despicable and should be shot. Until the “happy” (and lets face it purely fantastical) moment when Christianity becomes the perfect religion, va ta faire.

Jamal,
I love the poll on your blog.
“Reason(s) for War?
x Oil
x Islam
x Zionism
x Terrorism
x Political Lies
x New World Order
VOTE!”
Seriously. It’s raining in NYC and I needed a laugh. I’ve got my money on the Zionist New World Order.

“That’s all we need: Muslims with even more self-esteem”
Have you ever spoken to any muslims? Not the shouty types on the TV, but say a person somewhere where you’ve worked? You seem to be falling into the same trap which reduces faiths and races into characitures. Replace the word muslim with ‘jew’ or ‘negro’ or ‘woman’ or ‘homo’, and see if it would fit. Speaking as the child of Irish parents in the UK, sweeping generalisations are very rarely accurate.
