Goodbye to all that

I think I linked to this piece when it was originally published in 2002 (sidenote: Spot On is nearing its second birthday), but Ron Rosenbaum’s goodbye to leftism in general, and takedown of Marxism specifically, deserves another read.

It’s not really a take down of Marxism – more of mindless oppositionists. Poor Charlie, all he did was write a book, and now he his getting blamed for all sorts ! Even your amabassador has a use for Marx when countering Clarke (see link on Boyle post).

It seems something like 95% of conservatives, especially the hard-core fiscal conservatives, are former liberals who came to see the vast limitations of top-down planning. I certainly started off as a liberal in elementary school, to the extent I thought about politics at all. I think that part of the conservative experience, and the lack of such shifting on the other side, is what accounts for the statement “liberals think conservatives are evil, conservatives think liberals are misguided”.

I can’t say I was ever a ‘liberal’ because I grew up with the idea that government=bad and that prohibited me from seeing all solutions through liberal ‘government should help’ eyes. Still, my brother had the same upbringing as me and yet when he was 17 and took a presidential match quiz, he got the Socialist candidate because he answered every question with a government solution. We’ve done a lot of work since then. :-)
